SWCNTs produced via a laser ablation process were oxidized using different nitric acid strengths and various treatment times. The oxidized samples were characterized using Raman spectroscopy to investigate the level of defects introduced into the material for the different treatment types. FTIR was employed to identify the various functional groups in/on the tube material after the treatment. A larger increase in the defects was observed for samples for a period of 24 to 72 hours using 3M HNO_3 than for samples treaded for 1 to 2 hours with 10M acid. Bands due to -NO_2 and -COOH groups were observed in the FTIR spectra.
