The Chenani-Nashri Tunnel project started in September 2011 and is expected to be completed by mid-2015. The 8.9 km tunnel is excavated at 1,300 m level through the Patnitop hills in Jammu and Kashmir, northern India. The remote location of the tunnel in the Himalayan mountain ranges with complex geology and logistic constraints raise several engineering and management challenges to the contractor Leighton Welspun. For the tunnel excavation the contactor have invested in State-of-the-Art computerised drill jumbos from Atlas Copco. This type of equipment offers a number of unique features to support the user during the excavation and to improve the quality of the final tunnel. This paper describes the tunnel project and the application of modern drill jumbos in this kind of construction. Special focus is on the use of Measurement While Drilling (MWD) technique and the application and potential of this technology in this challenging project.
