Neural Sheath Tumours of the Peripheral Nerve - Neurosurgical Strategy and Outcome in 30 Cases

Despite extensive experience the surgical treatment of the different neural sheath tumours of the peripheral nerve remains controversial. In our study 21 patients with 30 neural sheath tumours are presented. The tumours arised from peripheral nerves of the lower extremity in 18 cases, from the upper extremity nerves in 6 cases, from the axillary fossa in 2 cases, from the neck in 2 cases and from nerves nearby the lumbar spine in 2 cases. Histological examination of the tumours demonstrated in 27 cases schwannomas and in 3 cases MPNST. 3 months after surgery 2 of the 3 patients with MPNST had died. 8 patients (n=21; 10/30 tumours) reported persistent loss of sensibility in parts of the innervation area of the peripheral nerve the tumour had arised from. All the other patients (11/21, 18/30 cases) recovered completely without any residual neurological symptoms.
