Cytogenetic studies of addition, substitution or recombination lines derived from hybrids between Triticum aestivum and Dasypyrum villosum were carried out by using the GISH (genomic in situ hybridization) method. The results obtained allowed us to locahze genes for discrete traits in the chromosomes of D. villosum (V chromosomes). A gene for red caryopses is located in the longer arm of chromosome 3V. The presence of awns on the ears seems to depend on several genes located in different V chromosomes. Chromosome 6V bears genes for immunity to wheat powdery mildew in the subtelomeric region of its longer arm. From the homeology between chromosomes as revealed by substitution or recombination events, we infer that D. villosum belongs to the same phyletic line of T. urartu (donor of the A genome of wheat) and Aegilops speltoides (B genome), and that Ae. squarrosa (D genome) has diverged earlier from D. villosum.
