The transcription factors EREBPs specifically bind to the GCC box (AGCCGCC), which is present in the promoter regions of ethylene-inducible genes encoding pathogenesis-, drought-cold-related proteins. Two orthologues (W6 and W17) of the Oryza sativa transcription factor EREBP1 are isolated from the Triticum aestivum L. by screening cDNA library using conserved EREBP/AP2 domain as a probe. Sequence analysis shows that W17 is 1.6kb in length, including a complete open reading frame (ORF), and W6 is 949bp with an incomplete N-terminal region. Deduced amino acid sequences searched using BLASTP in GenBank reveal that W17 contains a putative conserved EREBP/AP2 domain, and W6 contains an intact EREBP/AP2 domain. W17 is predicated to be a novel EREBP genein T. aestivum L., which is 40% homologous with putative EREBP transcription factor from O. sativa (gi: 15217292) and less than 29% with EREBP from Solanum tuberosum L. (gi: 28268684) and putative EREBP from T. aestivum L. (gi: 24940524).
