Dissimilar metal joints between thick section of austenitic stainless steel and high strength micro-alloyed steel are widely used in high-temperature applications like power stations and petrochemical plants. In this paper the development and advanced study of narrow gap technique to produce sound weld joint of thick section of austenitic stainless steel and micro-alloyed steel with developed mechanical and metallurgical properties has been discussed. Weld joints are prepared by P-GMA welding process by using multi-pass single seam per layer deposition technique which Significantly reduces the residual stresses in dissimilar weld joints as compare to conventional weld joint. Narrow gap weld joint of dissimilar metal produced by single seam per layer deposition is very effective procedure to produce sound weld joints and this study indicated that the narrow gap weld joint is useful in reducing the residual stresses in the weldment where it is one of the main factors which cause failures in dissimilar weld joints.
