Trekking as a family can be very rewarding for children and parents alike. But childrenshould be aware of what to expect. They are prone to boredom and are physically andmentally more vulnerable to fatigue. They eat and drink what they like, irrespective ofhunger and thirst. Young children, in particular, may be or become incontinent.Children are more vulnerable to exposure to the sun and cold. Finally, they are moresusceptible to severe, life-threatening illnesses such as gastro-enteritis withdehydration.To ensure a relaxing holiday a number of factors should be considered:1.Outdoor training at home2.A stimulating activity schedule to avoid boredom3.WaIking distances adapted to the physical and psychological abilities of the child;4.Avoidance of heavy backpacks5. Adequate caloric and liquid intake, food and drinks should be familiar, or when newtried out before the trip6.Hygiene when travelling with small children7.Adequate clothing to prevent discomfort, hypothermia and frostbite8.Sun protection to prevent sunburn or snowblindness9.A medical kit adapted for children, since dosage, drugs and administration varyconsiderably between children and adults.
