Risks and Safety in Avalanche Rescue

As a professional mountain rescue physician I see two main problems regarding safety during avalanche rescue:1. Safety of the rescue team:-^sThe head of the rescue operation is responsible for the proper organization at the avalanche site.-^sEquipment, physical and field training of rescuers, especially physicians2. Safety of the injured person:-^sProcedures and skills, including the handling of the patient, such as digging out, after-drop, avoidance of further cooling, proper transportation-^sMedical procedures and skills of "on-site treatment" of avalanche victims In general, the crucial question remains as to whether the professional rescuer should stay near the buried victim without performing an immediate rescue action because of the constant danger of a second avalanche.
