The Resource Discovery Network (RDN) is developing subject-based portal services to provide the UK's higher and further education communities with integrated access to distributed resources within the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) Information Environment. The Subject Portals Project (SPP) will provide single access points with common functionality (e.g. access management, user-profiling, cross-searching) to subject-specific datasets. Access Management (AM) has a crucial role within the Project as users have to be authenticated via multiple authentication mechanisms against different AM Systems (AMS) and scenarios (e.g. Athens), allowing users accessing from anywhere to have personalised services and obtain authorisation to access protected remote resources. This paper explains how the SPP has dealt with authenticating remote users to remote resources.
