Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A(2) (Lp-PLA(2)) and type II secretory phospholipase A(2) (sPLA(2)) represent emerging candidates for refined assessment of future cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. AIMS: To study if high levels of sPLA2 are associated with oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction in our population. METHODS: N= 150 patients with moderate-high CV risk. Measurements: S-PLA2, Total antioxidant capacity, TBARS, VCAM, Nitrotyrosine. RESULTS: Patients in the upper tercile of SPLA2 presented higher TBARS and VCAM values. CONCLUSIONS: High sPLA2 levels may be responsible for activating endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress. According to our results, sPLA2 is not just a proinflammatory biomarker, but also an active participant in atherothrombotic disease.
