Correlation of the kahn valdez criteria of 'hypertriglyceridemic waist' with superoxide dismutase circulating levels and haematologic factors.

In 2003, Kahn and Valdez proposed a modified Hypertriglyceridemic Waist (HW). AIMS: 1. To evaluate if the new criteria correlate with SOD circulating levels. 2. To study the procoagulant and hypofibrinolytic status. METHODS: N=294 with moderate-high cardiovascular risk. Two groups according to HW criteria and comparable by age and sex. Anthropometric parameters. Biochemical parameters: SOD, tPA and PAI-1. RESULTS: SOD levels were decreased in the group with hypertriglyceridemic waist; This group also showed higher tPA levels and PAI-1 levels; CONCLUSIONS: 1) Circulating levels of SOD observed in subjects with CH is a disadvantage in fight against the vascular oxidative stress. 2) We observed a procoagulant and hypofibrinolytic state, unfavorable for the vascular bed.
