How we won the battle but lost the war in software engineering

Software Engineering is a degree program in the IT (Information Technology) discipline that has been defined by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) with the Support of ACM (Automated Computer Manufacturers), IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), and CSAB (Computer Science Accreditation Board). The SEI document Guidelines for Software Engineering Education focuses on four perspectives or curricula including General Software Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, and Computer Engineering. However, at Purdue University Calumet, the IT department met resistance from the School of Engineering, and the Department of Math and Computer Science. This is the battle referenced in the title of this paper.This article will explain the challenge that the department of CIS/IT (Computer Information Systems and Information Technology) at Purdue University Calumet encountered when they proposed the Software Engineering curricula. CIS/IT won the battle at Purdue Calumet, but lost the war for accreditation since it is not one of the IT programs.
