FROM LEAN CONSTRUCTION TO LEAN DESIGN ― EXPERIENCE FROM REAL-LIFE PROJECTS IN DENMARK

Lean Construction, as a way of perceiving and improving the building process, has gained momentum in recent years. In Denmark, NIRAS (a large consulting firm) and MT Hojgaard (a large contracting firm) have been among the first to pick up the lean ideas. So far, Niras and MT Hojgaard have successfully implemented lean principles in more than 30 building projects. The focus of these projects has mainly been on the construction phase. However, the question arises: can lean thinking also be used in the design phase? This paper sets out to explore this question. The outline is as follows. Firstly, the results from applying lean thinking to the various building projects are reviewed. Secondly, we reflect on to which degree the experience can be transferred to the design phase. Finally, based on our initial experience from real life projects, we propose a model for the use of lean thinking in the design phase.
