ASSESSMENT OF SELF-CLEANING INDUSTRIAL FILTRATION SYSTEMS FOR PRODUCTION OF PARTICULATE FREE CLARIFIED SUGARCANE JUICE

This paper reviews self-cleaning industrial filtration systems suited for suspended solids removal from clarified sugarcane juice. Conventional clarification in plantation white sugar manufacture employing continuous settler-clariflers is unable to eliminate bagacillo, fine mud particles and colloidol matter. The suspended matter is carried over in the subsequent processing causing scale in evaporators and pans, interference with purging in the centrifugals, and an inferior product quality with a high ash content. So far, the trials in Indian mills for clarified juice filtration have focussed primarily on basket type strainers and open tray systems. This work assesses the state-of-the-art in self-cleaning industrial filtration equipment and discusses the technical and cost implications of such systems for particulate removal.
