Nowadays, PROFIBUS is the standard fieldbus system for various tasks in the sectors of automation and drive technology. Its high performance as an open, standardized fieldbus is now also established with regard to real-time applications. In general machine construction and especially in the field of production machines, the interface to drives must satisfy particularly high demands. To optimize packaging performance, packaging machines, for example, run at high speeds. Several drive axes move in a coordinated manner to ensure transportation of packaging material and goods. Digital drives are the executing elements which are connected to the control system through the open, standardized PROFIBUS bus system. Communication with the drives must not only be fast, but also highly accurate and coordinated. This can be realized by means of the PROFIdrive PROFILE (V3) based on PROFIBUS. Operation is defined in six application classes (Fig. 2). This also includes the clock-synchronous mode as well as the DSC system (Dynamic Servo Control) for high closed-loop control circuit gains. In addition to process data, engineering data can also be transmitted through the same bus. In this way, various data transmission processes can be executed with one single bus system. The described PROFIBUS features do not only meet the requirements of production machines, but even satisfy extremely high demands (e.g. of machine tools).
