The acute phase response has been studied in a variety of experimental environments. Some experimental models have utilized Lipopolysacharide (LPS) extracts to mimic an endotoxic effect (Carroll et al., 2001; Webel et al., 1997). Other models have utilized known enterotoxin producing bacteria to produce the same effect (Balaji et al, 2000). In these experimental models acute phase indicators in conjunction with body temperature and cortisol have been monitored. The major acute phase indicators include the cytokines, TNF-α and IL-6, and the serum acute phase proteins, hapto-globin, α -1 glycoprotein and C-reactive protein. The purpose of these experimental models has been to assess and define the immune response to a naturally occurring pathogen. The ability to monitor the immune response of the pig is a valuable asset in assessing overall herd health status.
