Managing a PRRS virus outbreak in one naive gilt herd in a multi herd production system

Although PRRSV is still a relatively new virus, it has spread rapidly throughout North America devastating many swine herds in its path. In order to limit the spread of the virus from farm to farm and from pig to pig in a herd it is imperative to understand the transmission of the virus. Understanding the transmission of the virus will also enable producers and veterinarians to establish eradication, control, and prevention strategies. The first step in understanding the transmission of a virus is tocharacterize the agent involved. PRRS virus belongs to the family of enveloped viruses, Arteriviridae. These viruses, because of their envelope, do not survive long outside of the host and are readily inactivated by common disinfectants. Members of Arteriviridae replicate in the cytoplasm of macrophages and have the ability to cause persistent infections.'
