The U.S. pork industry can be proud of the products it produces. It is certainly one of the reasons that domestic and export demand has grown like it has. The pork industry has progressed very rapidly in response to the consumer's demand for lean pork. The establishment of carcass merit pricing has led to an overall improvement in pork leanness. Pigs marketed in the United States are now leaner and more heavily muscled than ever before. In pursuit of the goal of producing and marketing lean pigs, today's pork producer has the opportunity to utilize a growing number of performance enhancing substances that can be broadly classified as growth promotants. The function of growth promotants is to modify metabolism of the pig. most often by partitioning or dividing nutrients among tissues. Combined with today's modern genetics, these substances can lead to production of leaner, more efficient pigs.
