RETROSPECTIVE STUDY OF PORCINE CIRCOVIRUS TYPE 2 SEROPREVALENCE IN THE SPANISH PIG LIVESTOCK FROM 1985 TO 1997

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is considered the cause of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). The disease was initially detected in 1991 in Canada, while this condition in Europe was firstly noticed in Brittany (France) in 1996. The first PMWS cases in Spain were described in 1997; nowadays the disease is widespread throughout the whole Spanish territory. The objective of this study was to retrospectively detect antibodies to PCV2 in sera of pigs from the Spanish livestock between 1985 and 1997.
