OPPORTUNITIES FOR CONTROLLING THE REGISTRATION OF LUNG LESIONS IN SLAUGHTERED PIGS AS A CONTRIBUTION TO QUALITY ASSURANCE IN DISEASE SURVEILLANCE SCHEMES

In several countries with intensive pig production, the monitoring of lung lesions at slaughter is established as a method of preventive veterinary medicine (2). There are different schemes for classifying the different degrees of lung lesions; commonto all, however, is the visual registration by meat-inspection personnel. Problems with the precision and validity of the visually registered data are due to - the variation between different investigators; - insufficient training of the investigators,if any; - lacking appreciation of the necessity of these investigations; - missing facilities for their surveillance. The present evaluation tries to find a possibility for monitoring the survey of lung alteration in two different approaches.
