The neonatal diarrhoea is mainly produced by Escherichia coli specially the enterotoxigenic variety (ETEC), wich is also capable of causing septisemic infection, localised abscess, meningitis or arthritis as a result of a bacteremia. The pneumonic pasteurellosis with P. multocida involvement is the final stage of enzootic pneumonia or the respiratory disease complex of the pig. (EPRC). These diseases collect a high toll in production in a pig farm. Pseudomonas sp. Has been associated to systemic diseases and has been implicated in urinary infections in pigs The most frequently used treatments against E. coli and Pseudomonas include one or more of the following antibiotics: Ampicilin, Apramycin Ceftiofur, Cefalotin, Neomycin, Espectomycin, Tiamulyn,Tetracyclin and Trimetorpin-Sulfametazol. To treat Pasteurellosis, the combinations include Pencillin, both procainic and benzoic; Tiamulin and Ampicilin and Oxitetraciclyn. The information available on antibiotic resistance is on the increase as can beseen not only in the isolated bacteria by in vitro tests, but also in failure to recover on the treated animales. Clearly new antimicrobials are needed and here at the FES-C we have devoted some time to the development of compounds by organic synthesis,where the main feature is the beta lactam ring. The names of the compounds under study are: Rac-cis-4-phenil-3-chloro-l-phenil-azetidin-2-one (PIF2) and Rac-trans-4-phenil-3-chloro-phenilazetitdi-2-one (PIF1). We are engaged if any of these compounds show antimicrobial activity.
