SEROPREVALENCE OF L. INTRACELLULARIS IN DIFFERENT PRODUCTION SYSTEMS

The porcine proliferative enteropathies (PPE) are a group of conditions produced by L. intracellularis. Challenge-exposure studies indicate that pigs infected with L. intracelhilaris develop an antibody response detectable 3 wks after infection usingan indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT) (3). Although this response may last a short period of time (2), information about the epidemiology of PPE can be obtained on a herd basis. The aims of this study were to determine the seroprevalence of L. intracellularis in growing and breeding herds and to compare the patterns of the infection found in farrow-to-finish and in multiple site operations.
