DETECTION OF PORCINE CIRCOVIRUSES IN COMMERCIAL VACCINES BY POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTION

Absence of extraneous viruses is a requirement for biological starting materials used in vaccine production and any contamination with living organisms or foreign viral antigens makes them unsuitable for that purpose, as described in the European Pharmacopoeia. No information is currently available on the possibility that porcine circoviruses (types 1 or PCV1, and 2 or PCV2) are present in commercial vaccine products used in pigs. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the use of a PCR assay in porcine vaccines as a quality control method to determine the presence of PC VI and PCV2, and to test commercially available vaccines used in Spain for these viruses.
