All bacteria known as rhizobia induce N_2-fixing root nodules on leguminous plants. In particular, Sinorhizobium meliloti nodulates species of the genera Medicago, Melilotus and Trigonella. The interaction of S. meliloti and Medicago tnmcatula has been studied for a long time by numerous international groups because this symbiosis represents a model system in the field of plant-microbe interaction.
