Regulation of serum leptin level by dietary conjugated linoleic acid in Sprague-Dawley rats

To clarify the effect of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on scrum leptin level, Sprague-Dawley rats were fed the diet containing 0 or 2 percent CLA for 1, 3, 6 and 12-week. In the rats fed 2 percent of CLA, the weight of perirenal white adipose tissue was comparable with that of the control rats. As for fatty acid composition of perirenal white adipose tissue, the ratios of palmitoleic acid/palmitic acid and oleic acid/stearic acid were significantly lower in CLA-fed group than the control group. InCLA-fed rats, serum leptin level was significantly lower than the control group and lipid content in the perirenal white adipose tissue exerted a decreasing compared to the control group at 1-week feeding. On the other hand, leptin level in the perirenal white adipose tissue was significantly lower in the CLA-fed group than the control group at 12-week feeding. These observations suggest that dietary CLA is an acute reducer of serum leptin level. This may afford on the explanation of the mechanism of anti-obesity effect of dietary CLA.
