A metal tube under lateral compression by the dynamic loading of a metal drop hammer is investigated. This classic problem is revisited through LSDYNA3D simulation and accompanying experiment. Comparison is made between the experiment, the literature and the LSDYNA3D simulation. The initial tube deformation is examined with the help of the theory of stress wave propagation. The experimental acceleration, velocity and strain are consistent with LSDYNA3D results, expect that the LSDYNA3D results show strong fluctuation. The transducer signal for acceleration shows 3 distinct stages. The experiments obtained the strain history of the absorber under impact for the first time.
