Radiation-induced luminescence, including thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), was employed to the evaluation of naturally accumulated doses. Quartz grain samples as luminescent mineral were extracted from six parts of a roof tile from Shin-Yakushiji temple in Nara-city, Japan, which has been built about 1300 years ago. All quartz grains revealed the highly sensitive red-TL (RTL) property in addition to moderately OSL-sensitive nature. The naturally accumulated doses from a single aliquot regenerative-dose (SAR) method showed 4.2-3.1 and 2.5-1.1 Gy from the RTL- and OSL-measurements for the middle part, respectively. One of the former results gave an age close to a known age.
