The modern roses have been produced through complex crossing produces among old roses and wild diploid species. One of the wild diploid species, Rosa multiflora, which is considered to. be one of the progenitors of modern roses, was used for karyotype analysis . Karyotype of R. multiflora was identified by the analysis of condensation patterns after Giemsa staining of prometaphase mitotic chromosomes and the sites of 45S rRNA genes were localized on the chromosomes by FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization). Seven pairs of chromosomes were discriminated by their morphology and condensation patterns, and were designated as chromosome Nos. 1 ~ 7 according to their total lengths. In the FISH experiment, in which 45S rDNA was used as the probe, two signals were detected at the end of the short arms and satellite regions of chromosomes 7 and allelic difference in their sizes at this site was observed.
