Proper function of the centromere is very important in mitosis and meiosis to ensure having balanced chromosome constitution of the daughter cells. All the known centromeres were revealed to have one or more families of repeated DNAs. Recently, we isolated a TC/AG microsatellite sequence from rice blast fungus, which was located on the centromeric region of the chromosomes of Hordeum vulgare. However, this microsatellite sequence was not found in the centromeric regions of the chromosomes of H. bulbosum. This paper describes possible relationship of the centromeric repeat differences with the chromosome instability of the H. bulbosum chromosomes in the hybrids between these barley species.
