The direction of chromosome science in the 21st century is discussed based on the forefront data in the chromosome science already obtained. First, the higher organization of chromosomal structures becomes direct target of chromosome science. Rapid development of information technology and instrument enable to analyze all the proteins that are involved in construction of chromosomal higher architecture. Second, new analytic technology reaching nano-order space resolution other than conventional molecular methods, will be introduced to analyze chromosome structure and function. Finally, more versatile visualization and manipulation methods will be introduced to utilize genetic information of chromosomes.
