A PC Reuse Approach - Students Recycling Used Technology (StRUT)

Students Recycling Used Technology (StRUT) was founded in 1995 by Intel and Oregon's Northwest Regional Education Service District. StRUT provides an avenue for transfer of obsolete computers from the business sector to the local schools. Students in the StRUT program evaluate, repair and refurbish donated computers and in turn place these computers into the local schools for use in the classroom. Since 1995, the program has expanded to 6 additional states. Over 30,000 PCs have been refurbished and reused in the program representing 1.5 million pounds of electronics. The StRUT program has been very effective in moving technology from the business sector to the schools for reuse. A recent Computer Recycle Day held in Phoenix, Arizona showed that this model could be effective with the general public as well. The one-day event resulted in over 4000 pieces of computer related equipment being donated to the schools. This paper will describe the StRUT program, its results to date and results of the Computer Recycle Day.
