Automated roll shop NDE inspection is an essential and effective early warning system to locate accidental damage incurred during prior service. Sophisticated eddy current devices provide information about roll dimensional characteristics, as well as flaw detection. The eddy current can only examine the roll surface, however, failing to disclose information about deep-seated roll damage or general roll material quality. For that purpose, effective ultrasound tests are being successfully employed as both a screening technology and a diagnostic tool for the inspection of all roll types and grades currently in use. This paper explores analytical ultrasound testing procedures that can be performed by roll shops. A discussion of the applicable theory identifies the physical limitations and potential capabilities for expanded roll quality evaluation using ultrasonic technology.
