A one-dimensional inverse heat conduction method has been used to study the effect of the ceramic coating thickness on Interfacial Heat Transfer Coefficient (IHTC) in the lost foam casting of A356 aluminium alloy. The IHTC has been measured in the centre of a flat plate that was cast in a vertical orientation. This work examines the change in IHTC due to a change in the ceramic coating thickness, while keeping all the other parameters constant (casting section thickness, pour superheat and coating type). The experimental results show that as coating thickness increased from 0.24 mm to 1.36 mm the average IHTC decreased from approximately 125 W/m~2K to 55 W/m~2K. Also, the experimental results have been compared to a three-component thermal resistance model of the casting/mould interface.
