Anodes of horizontal stud Soderberg (HSS) cells are enclosed by large hoods, which are exhausted in order to collect emissions of fluorides and hydrocarbons. The gas collection efficiency of HS Soderberg cells is usually determined by plant measurements. In this study a mathematical model for calculating the gas collection efficiency of HS Soderberg cells was developed. The model was applied to 92 kA HSS cells and the results were compared with published data. The favorable comparison suggested that the model could be used for predictive purposes. The effect of the gas exhaust rate, hood open area and booster exhaust rate on the overall gas collection efficiency of an HS Soderberg smelter was investigated.
