Researchers have long sought to develop a high-speed flywheel that is capable of storing energy on a sufficient scale to advantageously replace existing electrochemical battery technologies on space systems by offering reduced weights and extended operating life. Previously, no such breakthrough has existed, until now. Optimal Energy Systems, Inc. has developed and tested a flywheel invention that will make flywheel energy storage a reality for the high performance space satellite energy storage community. This paper summarizes some of the recent flywheel energy storage and high-speed electrical machine development activities at Optimal Energy Systems.
