This paper presents an adaptive mesh refinement and de-refinement strategy for topology optimization of continuum structures. Using an h-adaptivity scheme, the proposed mesh sizing function generates coarser elements inside solid and void material and smaller elements at the solid-void interface. This proposed framework also introduces an adaptation of the popular heuristic filter technique to take into account mesh adaptations. Using the SIMP optimization scheme, we obtain the same mesh-independent and checkerboard-free design as the optimal design on uniformly dense meshes, but with reduced numbers of elements and a more accurate description of structural boundaries.
