Growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on carbon fibers and carbon cloth by chemical vapor deposition has been investigated. A single layer of Fe, Ni, Co, and stainless steel as catalyst, and double layers of Fe/Cr, Ni/Cr, Co/Cr, Fe/Ti, Ni/Ti, Co/Ti, Fe/Ni, and Ni/Fe as catalyst and buffer layer were coated on carbon fibers and carbon cloth surface by magnetron sputtering. The growth, uniformity and purity of the CNTs are strongly influenced by the composition of the catalyst layer. Stainless steel layer was found to be the most efficient catalyst for uniform and pure CNTs growth. With single layer of Fe, Ni, Co, and double layers of Co/Cr as catalyst, only carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) were formed. With some double layers as catalysts, such as Fe/Cr, Fe/Ti, and Ni/Cr, a mixture of CNTs with CNPs is formed, while with Co/Ti, Fe/Ni, and Ni/Fe as catalyst a layer of short curved carbon fibers is formed.
