The University Library System (ULS) at the University of Pittsburgh inaugurated a digitization program for the libraries in 1997. Resources were reallocated internally to create the Digital Research Library Working Group to study the issues associated with mounting large-scale digital projects. The former Head of Cataloging was assigned as the first Coordinator of the Digital Research Library (DRL).
