The Diels-Alder adduct made from 1,5-cyclooctadiene and two molar equivalents of hexachlorocyclopentadiene undergoes partial reductive dechlorination in nylon 6,6 at 320-330°C. This process is strongly promoted by Sb_2O_3, and it leads to losses in weight that evidently result, at least in part, from the volatilization of HC1 and/or the gas-phase fire retardant, SbCl_3. Thus the reductive dechlorination probably plays a major role in the well-known synergistic interaction of antimony and chlorine that leads to the suppression of flaming combustion in this system.
