QTL analysis for heading date using recombinant inbred lines in rice

We developed two sets of recombinant inbred lines (RILs). The first one, RIC, was derived from a cross between japonica cuitivar Taichung 65 and indica cultivar DV85. The second one, RID, was derived from a cross between japonica cultivar Taichung 65and indica cultivar ARC10313. To investigate quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for heading date, 123 lines of RIC (F_9 generation) and 136 lines of RID (F generation) were genotyped using 116 and 89 restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) markers, respectively. In RIC?segregation distortions were found on 7 of the 12 rice chromosomes. In RID, distortions were observed on 4 of 12 rice chromosomes. Three QTLs for heading date were detected on chromosomes 4, 5, and 10 (P<0.01). QTLs detected on chromosomes 4 and 5 were newly identified. In RID, a total of five (P<0.01) QTLs were detected on chromosomes 4,7,10, and 11. Three QTLs identified in the first and second sowing were located in the same regions. The remaining two QTLs were specific for the first and second sowing. Near-isogenic lines are now under construction for further QTL analysis.
