Bone, a primary supportive organ possessing important physiological functions in hematopoiesis and calcium and phosphorus homeostasis, is comprised of dynamic multifunctional tissues. Two processes, bone modeling and remodeling, enable bone tissue to grow proportionally with other parts of the body in the young and maintain its structural integrity during adult life. A number of different cell types are present in bone (osteoblasts, osteocytes, osteoclasts, osteoprogenitor cells, chondrocytes, endothelial cells, monocytes, lymphocytes and hematopoietic cells), but the osteoblasts and osteoclasts are directly involved in bone modeling and remodeling. Throughout life, osteoblasts function to form new bone and osteoclasts resorb bone in a coordinated way.
