Robert E. (Bob) Brown was born in the Copper Country of Northern Michigan and educated in local schools. He received a BS in Metallurgical Engineering from Michigan Tech. After a 3 year tour in the US Air Force as a Navigator, Brown was employed by Dow Chemical in the Mangnesium Production Development Group working on basic ingot casting studies, cell construction materials testing, evaluations of 7 new cathode designs for the Dow E-Cells. Injected first heat of steel desulfurized with magnesium in the US at KO Steel Castings in San Antonio in 1958. Brown moved to a new primary magnesium production plant in Alabama as plant metallurgist. Promoted to superintendent of melting and casting and later to Director of Magnesium Operations in charge of the dolomite quarry, calcining, reduction, and melting and casting for a 10,000 tpy silicothermic magnesium plant.
