The aim of this paper is to highlight the value achieved by considering Human Factors relating to the design of command and control spaces early in the Concept phase. This stage of design involves numerous iterations influenced by competing engineering pressures and continuous compromises and trade-offs; compartments frequently change size, shape and location with corresponding changes in position of doors, hatches and stairs. It is at this early stage where influence from Human Factors specialists is required and where design changes for the benefit of the end user can be most easily made. The aim of this work was to enable BMT Defence Services Ltd Human Factors team to effectively represent the end user in design trade-off decisions during the Concept phase of BMT’s Venator?-110 light frigate. This was achieved by applying an efficient user-centred approach informed by established guidance but applied earlier than the current guidance suggests. The result is a more effective vessel taking account of end user requirements more cost effectively than would otherwise have been the case.
