As computer disk drive seeking accelerations have increased and track pitches hve decreased, a popular low-cost vcm/actuator configuration is showing increased dynamics problems. Previously ignored non-vertical magnetic fields in the vicinity of the coil are identified as the root cause. The force mechanism and effect of design parameters is discussed. Results of 3D FEA magnetics are presented along with laboratory test results.
