THE EFFECT OF CEFTIOFUR (NAXCEL~(TM) STERILE POWDER) IN COMBINATION WITH INACTIVATED FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE VACCINE ON PREVENTION OF POST-VACCINATION BACTERIAL INFECTION IN NURSERY PIGS

Pigs developed bacterial infections soon after vaccination against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in Taiwan during April and May 1997. Laboratory examination revealed that a number of imported FMD inactivated vaccines were contaminated with Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli. This study evaluated the effect of ceftiofur (Naxcel~(TM) Sterile Powder) in combination with the vaccines to prevent post-vaccination infections. A total of 220 nursery pigs in 3 commercial farms in southern Taiwan were enrolled in this trial; half were treated with vaccine only (controls), and the other half with vaccine and ceftiofur, The study began when the pigs were 28 days of age and ended at 56 days of age. The FMD vaccine was an ethylenimine, inactivated, BHK, cell cultured, OlCampos, oil adjuvant vaccine. The treatment group received ceftiofur 5 mg/kg body weight intramuscularly (M) mixed with the FMD vaccine at 28 days of age. The control group received only FMD vaccine IM at 28 days of age. All pigs received modified live virus of LPC Hog Cholera vaccine at 3 and 6 weeks of age. Study variables included body weight at 28 and 56 days of age and mortality.
