RESTRICTED FEEDING FOR PREVENTION OF E. COLI ASSOCIATED DIARRHOEA IN WEANED PIGS

In a Danish study, the mortality in litters suffering from postweaning diarrhoea was 4.5 times higher than in litters without diarrhoea (1). In Danish pig herds, the most common serotypes of Escheriaschia coli (E. coli) are 0138 and 0149, There is a need for finding alternatives to the use of antibiotics for prevention/treatment in these herds. One possibility is restricted feeding (2). The objective of this trial was to measure the effect of restricted feeding on the mortality, frequency of treatment for diarrhoea and production results in herds with E. coli associated postweaning diarrhoea.
