In Danish pig production Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (Mh) is the prevailing infectious agent in pulmonary infections. Apart from being the cause of enzootic pneumonia, Mh is the fundamental infectious agent in the respiratory disease complex. It is the initiator of various secondary infections in the lungs, and it is the most frequent cause of reinfections in the Danish SPF herds. Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP) causes serious clinical outbreaks of acute pleuropneumonia, often with quite a high rate of mortality. Certain APP infections seem to occur in the wake of Mh infections, others without presence of Mh.
