Streptococcus suis is the cause of a variety of pathological conditions in pigs, with meningitis being a prime manifestation. In humans, S. suis serotype 2 is also a well-recognized cause of meningitis. Here, inner ear involvement leading to hearing loss is affecting the majority of patients surviving S. suis meningitis. Animal model studies have shown correlation of the loss of auditory function to the development of suppurative otitis interna. This situation inspired us to perform histopathological examination of the inner and middle ears of 15 cases of spontaneous and two cases of experimental S. suis serotype 2 meningitis in pigs.
