A SURVEY OF VETERINARY STUDENTS ON ETHICS, WELFARE, AND FOOD SAFETY ISSUES IN ANIMAL AGRICULTURE: IV. PERCEPTIONS ABOUT HOUSING SYSTEMS IN ANIMAL AGRICULTURE, AND SWINE INDUSTRY TRENDS

This part of the survey was designed to obtain information about student opinions on the current housing systems for food animals and swine industry trends in their countries. The first part of this section of the survey identified certain food animalhousing systems, focusing on 1. confinement in stanchions, feedlots, stalls, crates or cages for, respectively, dairy cows (D1), beef (B1), veal (V), sows/swine (S1), lay hens (H1) and broilers (BR), and 2. non-confinedfree range or loose housing/pasture systems for, respectively, dairy cows (D2), beef (B2), swine/saws (S2), and lay hens (H2). The questions were listed separately, so answers could differ or be the same for both confinement and non-confinement systems for each species (Tables 1A and IB).
