In situ reductive dechlorination is a well established remediation. The technology is generally associated with such commonly encountered chlorinated ethenes such as trichloroethene and perchloroethene. Documentation of remediation of chloroform is limited and it is generally considered to be a recalcitrant compound. This paper presents a case study involving the treatment of a chloroform plume, with concentrations up to 15 milligrams per liter (mg/L), via injection of a sodium lactate solution into a saprolite and fractured bedrock aquifer. Samples of the saprolite have indicated iron content ranging from 20,000 to 50,000 milligrams per kilogram.
